Hirondelle Estate Vineyard, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

The crown jewel of Clos du Val’s estate program (and our home of almost 50 years) is a majestic vineyard in the heart of Stags Leap District. Acquired in 1972, this coveted land features 120 acres planted to nine different clones of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in North America. Often referred to as a “valley within a valley,” the Stags Leap District is just three miles long and one mile wide. Celebrated for its ideal climate that draws in cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay, Stags Leap District produces wines with velvety tannins and pure varietal flavors, while retaining ideal natural acidity—qualities that are perfect for making exceptional, age-worthy wines. For almost five decades, the Hirondelle Estate Vineyard has been the source for some of the Napa Valley’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons.

Riverbend Vineyard, Yountville, Napa Valley

Along a narrow stretch of the Napa River sits the Riverbend Vineyard, a 100-acre site with significant soil variations from north to south and bordered by a rich riparian area. The viticultural team at Clos du Val had the unique opportunity to plant this site in 2015-2016. Bordered by trees and the Napa River, the vineyard is blessed with a fertile and healthy ecosystem.

To add to the variety of distinctive fruit characteristics available to the winemaking team, the vineyard is planted to 10 different Cabernet Sauvignon clones and a wide variety of rootstocks, each matched to the specific soil type found in each part of the vineyard. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, our Riverbend Vineyard is planted to complementary Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier round out this diverse vineyard site.
